England is a wonderful country because it is a bastard country. A neo-Nazi argued with a black Briton, asking him whether he was English, clearly taunting him with the contrast that the English are white. But this is a view that only scratches the surface of Englishness. The English were pagans when the Romans came, and could not even rightly be called English at that point. Who knows what passed between the Romans and the Normans who succeeded the northwestern European Continentals who had moved into the territory in the meantime, and the royal line of today is drawn from Germany. The rich language is a bastard language, with elements of both Teutonic and Romantic tongues, and a voracious acquisitiveness of all things contemporary. It isn’t clear that the Jews don’t have a better place there than in America, for in America, the logic truly is one of assimilation, whereas in England, there remains a sense that the Jews are a corporate body unto themselves, apart from the English, in whose midst they live, and among whom they pass as British citizens no less than the man whom the neo-Nazi addressed: but this white nationalist oppresses us with his ahistorical delusion.
