Equality

No group is better or worse than any other group, and the members of one group are inherently no better or worse than the members of any other. This is a liberal, philosophical, American view, and it is to some extent a Protestant one, insofar as it privileges individuality over the claims of the group. We are free to take our distance from the just claims of rabbinic law to tell us how to live owing to the freedom we enjoy in Western society, which is an offshoot of liberal Christianity, certainly owing nothing to a Judaism that commands us to obey.
