Whoever said that flying is unnatural was right, and I think it helps to calm oneself down on a plane to realize that everyone aboard is afraid of mass death. We’ve had millennia to become accustomed to the wheel. “Flying is safer than driving” is an unconsoling abstraction, rather like saying that the fitness of an organism for the life it leads is a matter of chance, rather than intelligent design. It might be true, but it’s hard to believe.
