Evil is not a privation of good. The evil tremble, salivating, before the good; they want what they have, and feel resentful and envious, inferior in their own eyes. This is already the desire to be good, and patience is required to cultivate it, for our own good, which is theirs, too. This is labor, service, work, such as we are called to do in the machinery of the socioeconomic system, being kind to individuals we meet, since it is not the case that we go bare naked, celebrated on the shoulders of the crowd for our genius. We need the clothing of the everyday, the home provided by daily habit, which is mundane – holiness being for the world above – in order to redeem the potential that lies within us, for we, too, are evil.
