Praiseworthy

There has to be a balance between being desirous of recognition and being prepared to live without it. All wise men counsel against seeking honors. Why is this? If you are worthy, then it is because you take the measure of yourself from out of your own resources, so that if you are recognized, you are capable of maintaining your wits about you amidst the crowd’s applause. But if that applause is your measure of self-worth, then, busy pursuing it, you will never build up that character on account of which people are recognized in the first place.
